Trojans Softball Captures Third Straight GMC Championship

St. Thomas Aquinas High School Softball continued its championship legacy in commanding fashion, as the Trojans defeated the top-seeded Sayreville Bombers 9-0 to capture the Greater Middlesex Conference Championship at East Brunswick High School.

Backed by the energy of a packed crowd, the Trojans wasted no time making a statement. Senior Olivia Guarino opened the game with a leadoff walk before fellow senior Alyssa Collins executed a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt to move the runner into scoring position. Senior Bella Malinconico followed with an RBI hit to put the Trojans on the board, igniting an offensive surge that gave Aquinas complete control from the opening inning.

The Trojans’ patient and disciplined approach at the plate proved to be a major factor throughout the game, as timely walks consistently turned into scoring opportunities. On the basepaths, the speed and aggressiveness of freshman Mia Guarneri alongside seniors Guarino and Collins applied relentless pressure on Sayreville’s defense, forcing mistakes and creating momentum inning after inning.

Malinconico led the offensive attack with two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Guarneri delivered an impressive three-hit performance, while Collins, Guarino, and junior Leanne Higgins each added multiple hits as the Trojans finished with 12 hits on the afternoon.

Inside the circle, Higgins turned in a championship-caliber performance. The junior threw a complete-game shutout, allowing just seven hits while striking out six batters. Behind the plate, senior catcher Hailey Krainski provided a calm and steady presence, expertly managing the defense and helping keep the Sayreville lineup off balance from start to finish.

The championship victory served as redemption for the Trojans after suffering an extra-inning loss to Sayreville earlier this season. More importantly, the win secured the program’s third consecutive GMC Championship and the 12th conference title in St. Thomas Aquinas softball history.

The Trojans’ championship run also marked a memorable milestone for Head Coach Chelsea Mattis, who guided the program to a GMC title in her first season leading the team. Under her leadership, the Trojans continued the proud tradition of excellence that has become synonymous with St. Thomas Aquinas Softball.
