Science in Action: Blue Bottle Experiment Brings Chemistry to Life

Students in Mrs. Michelle Krupa’s Chemistry class recently brought science to life through the famous “Blue Bottle” redox experiment, a captivating reaction that demonstrates how electrons are transferred between substances. In this process, the solution changes from blue to clear as the chemical reaction unfolds, offering a vivid, hands-on illustration of oxidation and reduction at work.

What made this lab truly unique was how students documented their experience. Each group was tasked with creating a video lab report, an innovative approach that engaged every student and emphasized teamwork, creativity, and critical thinking. Within each group, students were assigned specific roles ranging from scientist and recorder to videographer and editor to ensure full participation and collaboration.

By using technology to film and produce their lab reports, students were able to study the experiment closely, analyze each step, and reflect on their performance. This method also allowed for meaningful review. Both students and teachers could observe techniques, identify errors, and discuss safety protocols.

The result was complete engagement and a noticeable boost in enthusiasm. Students not only deepened their understanding of redox reactions but also combined chemistry with marketing and media production through the video editing process. It was a clear example of how science education at St. Thomas Aquinas continues to evolve through creativity, collaboration, and innovation.
