Learning Beyond the Classroom: Psychology Students Experience Equine Therapy at Mane Stream

Learning Beyond the Classroom: Psychology Students Experience Equine Therapy at Mane Stream

Photos provided by Ms. Kimberly Gentile

Students in Ms. Gentile’s AP and Honors Psychology classes recently took their learning off campus with a field trip to Mane Stream, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing equine-assisted therapy and activities for individuals with physical, developmental, emotional, and medical challenges.

The visit offered students a firsthand look at how equine therapy supports growth, healing, and connection. Through a guided introduction, students learned about the therapeutic impact of working with horses and how these programs are designed to meet a wide range of needs.

The experience quickly became hands-on. Students stepped into the role of “horse caregivers for a day,” participating in activities such as grooming, leading, and caring for the horses. One of the most memorable moments came as students helped “paint” the horses, a creative and interactive activity that deepened their connection to the animals while reinforcing the trust and calm presence essential to therapeutic work.

For many, the day brought classroom concepts to life in a meaningful way, highlighting the real-world applications of psychology in a setting rooted in compassion and service.

Experiences like this reflect the power of learning that extends beyond the classroom. Ms. Gentile’s classes look forward to continuing this partnership in the years ahead, building on an experience that was both impactful and memorable.
