Hoops for Heart: A Celebration of Community, Competition, and Compassion

St. Thomas Aquinas High School recently brought its community together for an inspiring and energetic Hoops for Heart basketball tournament to benefit the American Heart Association. The event was more than just a day of friendly competition—it was a powerful reminder of the impact a united community can make.

This year’s event held special significance as it honored Austin Richards, one of our 2026 Aquinas Stars. As our STA Heart Hero, Austin demonstrates courage to all of us as he battles heart disease each day. His strength and determination inspired the entire community, and through the collective efforts of all participants, more than $1,000 was raised in support of the American Heart Association’s mission to fight heart disease and promote healthier lives.

The tournament featured an impressive turnout, with 30 students, 6 alumni, and 15 faculty, staff, and coaches stepping onto the court as players. The event was expertly coordinated by seniors Carley Schwarz, Emma Figueiredo, and Dan Jennings, along with junior Chris Gutauskas and Service Coordinator Mrs. Diane Fucci. Their hard work ensured a seamless and memorable experience for all involved.

From the opening tip-off to the final buzzer, the atmosphere was filled with excitement, school spirit, and camaraderie. Players and spectators alike enjoyed the opportunity to come together, support a meaningful cause, and celebrate the strength of the Aquinas community.

In the end, the championship team consisted of Mr. Matt Silvestri, Mr. Tom Weiler, Mr. Jack Brady, Ms. Taylor Maher, Mr. Julian Munoz, and Mr. Jimmy Elliot. Their victory capped off a day of spirited competition and fun.

Hoops for Heart proved to be a tremendous success—not only as a basketball tournament, but as a reflection of our shared commitment to service, compassion, and giving back. Through events like this, we strengthen our bonds and expand our reach to support the community.
