In a commanding display of championship-caliber softball, the softball team has claimed its sixth Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament title in seven years with a 5–1 victory over South Plainfield at Woodbridge High School.
The Trojans wasted no time asserting themselves, jumping to an early 3–0 lead in the first inning and never looking back. The team was led by the dominant pitching of senior Liz Negron and a relentless offense.
Though the two teams shared the GMC Red Division title this season and split their regular-season matchups, Friday’s championship game belonged to the Trojans, playing a near-flawless game.
“We did the little things right today,” said head coach Missy Collazo. “We did all the little things that we needed to do. You’ve got to make contact every time up, put the ball in play and then get the big hit at some point.”
The big hits came early. After Gwen Negron led off the game with a walk, Kamerin Collado doubled and Liz Negron followed with a towering double to center that brought both runners home. Sacrifice flies from Melody Webb and Sophia Colucci rounded out the three-run frame.
STA added insurance runs in the third and fifth innings. Collado scored again in the third after being hit by a pitch, and in the fifth, she doubled and came home on a single by Webb.
Meanwhile, on the mound, Liz Negron was electric. She scattered hits while striking out eight, consistently navigating out of danger even as South Plainfield placed runners in scoring position in all but one inning.
The championship caps off another historic season for STA Softball and reinforces the lasting legacy Coach Collazo has built at the helm. With 11 overall GMC Tournament titles and over 300 wins now under her leadership, the program continues to define excellence in Middlesex County softball.
