Sanyah Queen Captures State Title, Making STA History
Posted on 03/11/2025
St. Thomas Aquinas senior Sanyah Queen has officially cemented her place in STA athletics history with a commanding 12-6 victory in the 138-pound final at the 2025 NJSIAA Girls State Wrestling Championships. Becoming a state champion is a milestone that reflects years of determination, resilience, and growth.

This victory was more than just a match, it was the culmination of four years of relentless hard work and perseverance. After finishing as a runner-up in 2023, Queen has focused on one goal ever since: reaching the top of the podium. Not only did she achieve her goal, but she did so in dominant fashion, finishing the year with an impressive 32-2 record.

Queen’s win marks a major milestone for STA wrestling. She is now only the second state champion in program history, joining Apryl Coffman (2023) in achieving the sport’s highest honor. Her success didn’t happen overnight. Under the guidance of STA’s dedicated coaching staff, including Coach Bob Murphy, Queen refined not just her skills but also her mental approach to competition.

“It’s been a four-year journey,” said Coach Murphy. “She’s always been on the podium, but getting to the top takes something extra. She found that edge this year.”

Queen’s adaptability and mental resilience were key to her victory. Rather than relying on a rigid game plan, she embraced fluidity and strategy, allowing herself to adjust to her opponent’s movements in real-time.

“Anybody can change up how they wrestle at any moment,” Queen explained. “But I was just the best version of myself, and I think it paid off.”

Her strong wrestling IQ, combined with significant growth in her offensive attacks, made her a formidable competitor this season. Murphy noted that her improvement on her feet made her more dangerous than ever before.

Queen’s victory is a shining example of the commitment and support that define STA athletics. From top-tier coaching and mentoring to a school culture that fosters excellence, STA provides student-athletes with the tools to succeed not just in competition, but in life.

Congratulations to Sanyah Queen, our newest state champion!
