In a night of back-to-back thrillers, the girls and the boys basketball teams sealed the deal with the third sweep of the Greater Middlesex County tournament in-a-row. This was the girls' fourth-in-a-row GMC title in-a-row and the boy's third.
In their head-to-head with the Colonia Patriots, the girls pulled out a 49-42 victory, though not without a tough fight from their opponent. The Patriots came prepared after challenging the Trojans twice in regular season play. Nevertheless, the Trojans answered back and were able to clinch the victory. Sophomore Leah Crosby was named tournament MVP for the second year in-a-row on her 12 points and 15 rebounds. Helping drive home the victory were also Gianna Chuffo with 11 points and 7 rebounds and Jessica Cooper with 9 points and 6 rebounds.
In the nightcap of the GMC tournament, the boys basketball team faced the South Brunswick Vikings, who also came prepared to put up a challenge against the Trojans. There were 18 lead changes during the game, 10 of them in the third quarter alone. The Trojans gained momentum in the final quarter with Michael “Deuce” Jones scoring seven out of final nine points for the team. Jones earned the game ball with his 21 points and 4 steals. Assisting on offense were Jaden Kelly and Samir Thomas with 8 points each. On defense, Jalen Pichardo and Kamal Lee cleaned the board with 7 rebounds each.
Both teams move on to the state tournament beginning with the girls at home on Wednesday, February 22 against Union Catholic.
