The St. Thomas Aquinas High School library has entered a new era with a new look and a new name: The Commons. In its more than 50 years as the academic hub of STA, the library has taken many forms that have reflected the latest in student needs and instructional developments. The current renovation is the most sweeping that the library has undergone, which has transformed the space into a warm, inviting 21st century learning center that is less transactional and more relational.

On Thursday, February 2, the Most Reverend Bishop James F. Checchio of the Diocese of Metuchen attended the dedication ceremony and formally blessed the space, which will be used by students in the pursuit of knowledge and collaboration.

Director of Catholic Identity Fr. Mike Tabernero opened the ceremony with prayer and reflected on the school's patron saint, St. Thomas Aquinas, who provides inspiration to seek wisdom and grow in knowledge.

Students Nick Basilico '24 and Morgan Ryan '23 spoke about how the newly-renovated space will transform many different academic activities from research to group study to classroom projects. Art teacher Ms. Sarah Hamill spoke about art students' plans for decorating the Commons with artwork that reflects the academic purpose of the space and the the religious inspiration of St. Thomas Aquinas. And Commons coordinator Mrs. Sharon Taub shared the vision and features of the space, such as reconfigurable furniture, wireless printing, charging stations, and whiteboards for brainstorming and group work.

“It's truly exciting to see the library transition from a quiet place for students to study individually to a vibrant hub for collaborative and digital learning,” said Library Sharon Taub, who has been instrumental in the many changes that the library has undergone over the past decade.

Bishop Checchio concluded the ceremony with a blessing of the space and commented on the transformation that it has taken.

With the sweeping changes to the library’s atmosphere, amenities, and layout, STA hopes to create another academic hub like the STEM Learning Lab where students enjoy going, either during school as part of a class or after school with friends to engage and collaborate on assignments.
