Sports Highlights for the Weeks of January 11 and 18

Things are heating up for our winter athletes despite the frigid weather. Here are some of the varsity highlights from the last two weeks:

The boys basketball team moves to 13-0 with wins over Colonia 64-52, Plainfield 71-47, Iselin Kennedy 89-26, and North Brunswick 67-26. For the season, Adam Silas is the lead scorer averaging 17.6 points/game followed by Terrell Pitts with 15 per game. Cleaning the glass has been Sherief Guinyard with over 6 rebounds/game. Adam Silas also leads in assists with 5 per game.

The girls basketball team still stands atop the Red Division with only one loss. Recent wins include East Brunswick 61-53, Moore Catholic 65-45, and J.P. Stevens 59-34. Jessica Cooper leads the team in scoring and rebounds, averaging 16.5 points/game and 11.8 rebounds/game. Both Kayla Perez and Amarilis Shubick are averaging 4 assists/game.

The girls swimming team took home a big win over East Brunswick 88-82 as well as a tough loss to J.P. Stevens 89-81. Sierra Smith racks up wins the 200 Free and 100 Fly, Grace Neno in the 200 Free, Natalie Neno in the 200 Individual Medley (twice) and the 100 Breast (twice), Kaitlin Hall in the 500 Free (twice), and Sydney Zeszotarski in the 100 Back. The 400 Relay team of Kaitlin Hall, Natalie Neno, Sierra Smith, and Grace Neno won against both opponents and against J.P. they swam a season's best 3:55.52 to win the final event. The team heads to the GMC championship on Saturday the 29th.

The wrestling team is on a five-match winning streak with defeats against Manalapan 39-29, Carteret 78-0, Spotswood 61-15, Metuchen 66-6, and North Brunswick 73-6. The team recently clinched the GMC Blue Division title and is currently tied for 1st in the GMC.

The boys bowling team finished up the regular season with a 4-0 win over Carteret and the girls shut out both Carteret and Mother Seton to clinch the Blue Division title. The girls go to the GMC first round on Monday.
