Sports Highlights for the Weeks of December 27 and January 3

The STA winter athletes have gotten off to a powerful start. Here are some varsity highlights from the last couple weeks:

Boys Basketball: The team currently boasts a 9-0 record, which taking home the championship trophy at the Boardwalk Classic over Christmas break. More recently, the team defeated Woodbridge 88-24 and Edison 75-53. Adam Silas put up a triple-double against Woodbridge and he currently leads the team in scoring with 160 points this season, averaging 18 per game. Sherief Guinyard has grabbed 52 rebounds for an average of 6, and Kamal Lee has 24 steals for an average of 3.

Girls Basketball: The girls stand at 2-0 with a recent 57-33 victory over Edison. Jessica Cooper notched a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds while Amaralis Shubick put up 14 points and nabbed 4 steals.

Boys Wrestling: Despite a few cancelled matches, the team is off to a strong start with a 3-1 record (2-0 in the GMC). This week the team defeated South River 66-15 and Middlesex 54-27 while narrowly losing to Freehold Borough.

Boys Bowling: The boys currently stand at 7-6-1 with two shutouts this week against South Plainfield. Leading the team in scoring for the team so far is Phil Halecki with 5,406 followed by Patrick Regis with 5,323.

Girls Bowling: The girls clinched the Blue Division championship this past week thanks to a 9-0 GMC record (12-2 overall), most recently recording wins over South Plainfield 3-1 (twice) and Middlesex 4-0. Alexandra Sardis leads the girls in points for the season with 6,582 followed by Victoria Aldridge with 5,400.
