Students Show Creativity and Talent at Maker Faire

“It’s incredible what you can accomplish in a couple months.” These words from St. Thomas Aquinas High School senior Megan Kibalo encapsulate the fervor that pervades the STEM Learning Lab, also known as the Makerspace, as students and faculty prepared for the fourth annual Maker Faire.

After months of preparation, this year’s Maker Faire came together on Wednesday, May 18 as a testament to the incredible array of STA students’ talent, creativity, and ingenuity. Student exhibits were held both indoors and outdoors and featured projects that ranged from catapults to blacksmithing to cardboard mechanical devices and more.

The finished projects, many of which were interactive, dazzled attendees and were the culmination of an ongoing, collaborative process involving both fellow students and teachers, with sparks of inspiration being struck as recently as a couple months before the big day but in some cases as far back as a couple years prior. Taking over the program this year was Mr. Mike Lewon, who has incorporated his own abilities and interests to shape the program. Helping him is also a trained group of STEM Techs, who form the backbone of this initiative. Those STEM Techs assist the students who frequent the Makerspace after school, pairing up based on interest and know-how in order to offer guidance, inspiration, and technical help. Through collaborations like these, the STEM program at STA has continuously advanced and expanded along with the passion and creativity of everyone involved.
