Sports Highlights for the Week of April 2

It's been a rainy start to the spring season but that hasn't slowed our athletes. Here are some of the varsity highlights from the first week of competition:

The boys and girls track team kicked off the season with a meet verse Carteret HS. The girls were led by Kayla Foley (3rd - 100m), Espi Mojica (1st - 400m), and a distance sweep in the 1600m by Lia Acosta (1st), Liz Pepe (2nd) and Sanjina Parikh (3rd). The boys team was led by Sam Villanueva (3rd - 400 Hurdles), Jayden Young (3rd - 100m), Matt Lowe (3rd - 400m), and a distance sweep in the 1600m by Neal Choksi (1st), Nick Lueng (2nd), and Shane Samuelson (3rd).


The varsity softball team won the first two games of the season, first with a 7-0 victory over Immaculate Conception. The Trojans' offense exploded for 11 hits. Kaitlyn O'Neill was 2 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 1 RBI. Mary Kate Murray was 2 for 3 with a double, triple, and 2 RBIs. Madyson Epps was 2 for 4 with a double and 2 RBIs and Melissa Martinez had a double and 2 RBIs. Mackenzie Fizer hit a solo homerun in the 7th inning. Hayley Wieczerzak earned the win by pitching a shutout, striking out 20 batters and allowing only 3 hits.
The girls followed that win with a 7-0 over Monroe as well. Hayley Wieczerzak earned the shutout win, pitching a no hitter, striking out 14 and walking 2. The offense was led by Mary Kate Murray, Amya Hill, and Liz Negron.


The boys tennis team defeated Perth Amboy 4-1. Kameron Johnson won at first singles, 6-1 and 6-0. Kiran Bhattacharya won at second singles, 6-1 and 7-5. Thomas Wyskowski won at third singles, 6-2 and 6-2. Renzo Cuyuche and Eugene Tak won at first doubles, 6-2 and 6-0.


Tyler Kadi led the Trojans offensively in an 8-1 win over Carteret, going 2-3 with a HR and 2 RBI's. Christian Scaff and Reed Kerstetter had 2 hits apiece in the victory. Ricky Del Rio hurled 6 and 2/3 innings striking out 10 and allowing 4 hits to pick up his first win of the season. Zach Diaz, Artis Ray, Phil Unangst, and David Ryden all singled in the win.
