Our History

Founded in 1969, St. Thomas Aquinas High School (STA) is a coeducational, college preparatory Catholic high school in Edison, New Jersey, and the only diocesan high school in the Diocese of Metuchen. Grounded in faith, academic excellence and the development of the whole person, STA serves students in grades 9 through 12 and proudly nurtures a diverse and inclusive learning community.

After the formation of the Diocese of Metuchen, the school was renamed in 1984 to honor its first bishop, Bishop George Ahr. For more than 30 years, Bishop George Ahr High School (BGA) faithfully served students and families across Central New Jersey, cultivating a vibrant community rooted in Catholic values. During this time, the school became a place where lifelong friendships were formed, traditions took hold, and generations of alumni began their journeys of faith, learning and service.

In July 2019, to coincide with the school's 50th anniversary, it was rechristened in honor of its patron founder, St. Thomas Aquinas. This reaffirmed the school’s dedication to his belief in the unity of faith and reason, the importance of harmony, and the pursuit of natural human knowledge. BGA and STA alumni continue to stand together as members of the St. Thomas Aquinas community, united in tradition and spirit as One Trojan Family.

St. Thomas Aquinas High School’s enrollment is open to young men and women of all faiths. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex or creed in the administration of its educational, admission or financial policies, activities, athletics or any school-sanctioned program. As a Catholic institution, all students, regardless of background, are required to complete the religious curriculum and participate in worship services.

STA has a diverse student population representing more than 60 districts, primarily from Middlesex, Monmouth, Somerset and Union counties.

A dedicated team of religious leaders, faculty, staff and administrators partners with engaged parents, alumni and benefactors to provide an exceptional Catholic education rooted in faith, academic excellence and shared purpose.

OUR PATRON: SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS

Saint Thomas Aquinas, one of the Church’s greatest scholars and teachers, serves as the inspiration for our name and mission. His lifelong pursuit of truth, uniting faith and reason, continues to guide the way we approach education today. Aquinas taught that learning is not only about knowledge but also about forming wise and compassionate individuals prepared to meet life’s challenges with integrity and purpose.

At St. Thomas Aquinas High School, we embrace this legacy through our commitment to Aquinas Excellence. By educating the whole person in mind, body, and spirit, we prepare our students not only to succeed in the classroom but also to grow as leaders of character and faith who are ready to meet the challenges of their time.
